Youtube, Animoto, & QR Codes: It's a Digital Age - The possibilities are endless!

Today on the blog, we will be talking about 2 different online video applications and a cool way of sharing coded pictures that can bring you to those videos.

Youtube:

So on youtube we were asked to look at 4 different channels created by varied libraries. These 4 libraries youtube channels have videos that show mini-lessons on how to find creative commons images, introduction to the library, student created videos for classes, library promotions, and even dance parties. The channels are Norman Public Schools by Calypso Gilstrap, The Unquiet Library, Pikesville High School Library,  and BBMS Media.

Which is the most helpful for students?

Norman Public Schools: One of the most helpful videos that I saw for the students would be the "Getting Started with the NHS Library Website." The information in this video is super important for incoming freshman, new students, parents, and all those kids who forgot everything over the summer. The library's website is normally how to get to all of the important informatio, online catalong, and databases for research. This sort of video is probably one of the most important for a library to have available to their students.

The Unquiet Library: This video is one of the many examples of how to use youtube for tutorials and important need to knows for the upper level high school library. This library is obviously high school and many of the tutorial videos focus on citations, research, and using different resources. This particular video shows how to pull information from the Library Reference Center to Easybib for citation purposes.

Pikesville HS Library: This video would be very helpful to students and parents explaining the registration process at the High school. I think this is very important, because it is such a big part of the high school experience.

BBMS Media: This youtube provides tons of hilarious videos about overdue books and promotion of the library, but also so many informational videos that are so helpful to their students. Attached is the Noodle Tools- How to Print/Export your Works Cited.

Which is the video that students would like best?

There are so many on all of these Library channels that students would love. I think that some of these librarians really know what to do to get those kids in the door. Here are one from each youtube channel.

I created a book teaser trailer for one of my favorite YA science fiction novels- Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Use your QR reader app to scan the QR code to watch my Book trailer!

How you will use videos to promote your library?

After watching so many videos created by libraries- I have so many ideas on how to use videos in the library. Videos can be used for instructional purposes like tutorials, introductions, and lessons for students or parents can watch. They can also be used for promotional purposes- videos of activities, community events, and showing off students, teachers, and community members. They can also be used for promotion of the collection in the library- book trailers, author visits or videos, and tutorials on how to access audiobooks, ebooks, and databases.

QR Codes:

QR codes can be very useful in the library and classroom. QR codes allow a visual representation of a website link that all a person has to do is use a QR reader app instead of trying to type in a link. This allows for a lot less confusion when trying to find these resources.

I have seen QR codes being used on the back of book suggestions or book talk cards so that you can scan and watch a book trailer on the book you are looking at. I think this is a great use. This can also be used for community information and promotion of events.

Overall, all of these applications can be incredibly useful in the library and classroom. I think it is also imperative for the librarian (or media specialist) to know about these applications and be able to help students and teachers use these applications successfully.

  1. Kaitlyn,

Thanks for sharing your great ideas for using videos in the library. After watching the YouTube channels of the libraries, I too got excited about all of the different ways we can benefit from having a YouTube channel for our school. I also liked working with QR codes, because there are a lot of fun ways we can use these with students like scavenger hunts or as stickers inside of books to link to additional information. I agree with you that it is so important for us as librarians to know about these programs and teach them to our students and teachers.

  2. Awesome book trailer! You did a really good job.

I agree with you about QR codes being used to promote events but I did think of one downfall that I have noticed; students often walk by these codes and ignore them. I think it would be beneficial to create sign that announces an incentive like "If we get 500 scans, the library will be providing a pizza party!" I'm sure there are other incentives that would not be as costly but that's just off the top of my head. Have you noticed that QR codes are often ignored? What are your thoughts on this?

    1. Kids might be passing the QR codes by because they do not realize what they are for. Maybe creating a fun video of how and why QR codes can be used may be helpful to pick up traffic. Also providing a few ipads or ipods that kids could walk around the library with to use to scan the codes might help.

  3. I see we agree on some of the you tube videos from these libraries. I agree these videos are great tools to use in the classroom and library. We are living in the 21st century filled with technology and everyone is practically using it in their daily lives to share and promote their interests. I like your ideas about using QR codes and the videos for library promotion. Thanks for sharing your ideas and a fantastic book trailer. I love the way you used the music records for it. :)

  4. Kaitlyn,
I really enjoyed reading your blog this week. Your ideas on how to create and use videos were very interesting. I like the idea of promoting what is happening along with using videos for instructional purposes. Also, great job on your book trailer. I love how you tied the 80s theme into the book trailer. Great ideas.
